Corporatisation of Leisure/ Tourism moves into Round 2.

Preface by Guy Besley, Latitude Travel Services,

This is old news, but goes to show that the Corporatisation of the Leisure/ tourism space is well and trully into round 2 of corporatisation.

What do I mean by that? Well many of you know that I have a little experience in corporatising some tourism assets; albeit a brilliant marketing success, but disastrous business decision, but as we were in the early stages, like our friends at MFS, we took the initial hit! Like all good property investors new into a niche :-)

The downturn in tourism killed us, BUT has now opened the door to the 2nd wave of corporatisiation. This is only one example, and I can talk about as its clearly in the public arena. So in short as the first round of corporatisation entrenched in tourism assets the banks got heavily involved, the guys in the first round (ourselves included) got slammed from every direction. Now the banks are stuck with dead assets and happy to take their haircut to the shrewed corporate raider. Hence the birth of round 2 in the corporatisiation of Tourism and leisure assets.

Is this good or bad? Well I could argue good, because at least someone is coming back into Leisure, and although the “pioneers” of corporatisation are all but wiped out and the banks took a bath, at least the next lot will stand a chance to mop up the pieces. Individual, or mums and dads (for lack of a better word) don’t have the nause to take on the banks etc. to get the outcomes required to make these deals happen. So the bottom is being picked, and it wont end in a dirty finger ;-) but some great assets being reviatlied thanks to the corporate sector and entrepreneurs.

So have a quick read of this article, CLG buys Heli Charters. Chris Morris has come along way from Computershare and now is a solid name in leisure. Shame my outcome wasn’t the same (shared a similar background. lol)

Good work guys!

Colonial Leisure Group buys Heli Charters in far north Queensland | Australian Aviation Magazine

National hospitality and brewing company Colonial Leisure Group (CLG), owner of Nautilus Aviation in Townsville, has entered into a contract to buy Heli Charters in Cairns. The combined business will make it one of the biggest helicopter fleets in northern Queensland.

This is CLG’s third investment in the region after acquiring the luxury Orpheus Island on the Great Barrier Reef in 2011 and Nautilus Aviation in 2012.

CLG owner Chris Morris said: “Our aim is to support local tourism in the region by serving tourist attractions in and around northern Queensland with a top-rate helicopter and maintenance service.”

Heli Charters will offer services to Orpheus Island and link to other luxury properties in the North Queensland region. The combined helicopter fleet will cover tourism charters and commercial operations including mining, telecommunications and government contracts.

The purchase includes three helicopters, making a total of seven in the fleet, with plans to purchase more in the near future, Morris said.
